Map of the World by Natural Skin Color
i’m really dumbfounded that i never realized skin colour is literally just caused by being closer to or farther from the equator and the resulting sun exposure and skin darkening
actually, its an adaptation. natural selection. people with darker skin are selected for in areas near the equator, where the melanin that causes the darker color protects them from radiation and protects them from skin cancer and other health defects, and because they are healthier they can pass on that trait more. people near the poles have lighter skin because it allows them absorb more of the limited sunlight to convert to vitamin d.
THIS IS THE THING SOME PEOPLE HATE OTHER PEOPLE OVER.
Evolution of melanin levels based on geographical location.
This isn’t entirely accurate but it’s a pretty good generalization. Though, many people native to northern most parts of the world are not fair skinned (at least not Caucasian levels of “fair skinned”).
The Inuit people are a great example of a non-fair race living very far up north. However, they are able to maintain having a tan skin tone while living with minimum sunlight due to their Vitamin-D rich diet. I don’t remember if it was from fish or blubber, but one of those food groups offered their diet the supplement they needed.
Nose shapes are another thing determined by the region ones ancestors lived in. A longer nose is great for cooling air down as it travels an extra length before hitting the lungs, so people with lineage from hot desert-like environments traditionally have longer/bigger noses. Flat short noses are good for cutting down moisture entering with each breath, so people with a genetic background from tropical/ humid zones are likely to have these. Small “pixie” noses do the opposite of the long nose and allow air to heat up in the human body much faster, so this type of nose is great for people living in very cold environments, thus bringing us back to the Inuit people.
Most of our physical differences are little more than the adaptations our ancestors needed in order to survive. Our histories can be seen in the structure of our faces and in the texture of our hair, and I hate how people see this as a thing to mock rather than embrace. Humans have come so far from their little tribes struggling to survive on the savanna. They have physically adapted and diversified just to survive all over this little blue rock that we call home. If you don’t think this a thing to embrace and celebrate, then shame on you.
okay, so what happens DIRECTLY before this bit of dialogue needs needs NEEDS to be talked about.
This entire episode is all about Batman and Orion shitting all over how The Flash does things and how flippant and aloof he is and so they all go to his city to try to stop some of his criminals from trying to kill the flash.
And when Flash finds this villain in the bar Batman and Orion both try to beat the info out of him and flash calls them off and sits right down next to him and just asks if he’s gone off his meds and lets him vent about what’s going on in his life. And at the end he tells the Flash that he’ll start taking his medicine again and where the rest of the villains are that are trying to kill him. ONLY THEN does Flash tell him to hand himself in.
once Flash is assured that he’s okay and not going to hurt anyone else. it flies in the face of Batman’s fear and Orion’s brutality, it throws both of their brutal real-world techniques out of the water… because the Flash just wants people to be happy and safe, not to strike fear or defeat foes.
and that makes him pretty amazing
The flash is awesome.
